Miami-Dade could close five more schools. Here's what to know

A newly released list of Miami-Dade public schools that could very soon be closed is significantly shorter than the one the district posted in August. The latest list , posted by the Attendance Boundary Committee this week, marks five schools as “targeted” for potential closure and a sixth for expansion in the near future. The earlier plan, which was paused by the superintendent, would have made changes at 12 schools. The five schools on the list for possible closure are Golden Glades Elementary, Myrtle Grove Elementary, Carol City Middle, Lorah Park Elementary and Hammocks Middle. Southside Preparatory Academy, currently a K-8, is listed as “targeted” for a K-12 conversion. Students at the closing schools would be absorbed by nearby schools — a process also referred to as “consolidation” by the district — two of which could be converted from high schools to 6-12. Hammocks Middle students would be rerouted to Felix Varela High, which would become a 6-12 campus. Some students from Carol City Middle would also be sent to Carol City High, which would also convert to a school serving grades 6 though 12. Voters rejected Virginia Key redevelopment deal. What happens to the marinas now?

On Tuesday, about 65% of Miami voters rejected an $80 million redevelopment plan for two city-owned marinas and waterfront land on Virginia Key. It was the second time in recent years that voters rejected a long-term lease of the almost 28-acre property, which includes the Marine Stadium and Rickenbacker marinas. But Tuesday’s rejection of Miami’s Referendum 3 doesn’t mean the current operator of Rickenbacker Marina — and its tenant, the Gramps Getaway bar and restaurant — gets to stay forever. Instead, it takes commissioners right back to the drawing board on an issue that has plagued the city for over a decade — with many of the same players vying for the valuable chunk of land. Moving forward, the City Commission could decide to put out a new request for proposals and take another bid to voters in the future, or commissioners could decide that the city should run both marinas itself. The city already runs the Marine Stadium Marina. Jason Reding Quiñones resigned Friday as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, ending a tenure marked by turmoil within the Miami-based federal prosecutor’s office and controversy over its involvement in an investigation targeting perceived enemies of President Donald Trump. Democrat Lucia Báez-Geller defeated incumbent Republican Fabián Basabe for Florida House District 106, returning to elected office after serving on the Miami-Dade County School Board.
