Ceremony marks opening of new Wilshire Division police station
The Los Angeles Police Department’s new $1.7 million Wilshire Division police station at 4861 Venice Blvd. was dedicated in this photograph in the May 9, 1974, issue of the Park Labrea News. Capt. Robert S. Tucker, third from right, participated in the flag salute with other members of the command staff. It marked the second move for the police station, which was established in 1922 on Wilshire Boulevard in the Koreatown area, and was later located at 4526 W. Pico Blvd. The station remains open today and can be reached by calling (213)473-0476.

A record number of streetlights are out across Los Angeles, the NBC4 I-Team has found, and some blocks in commercial and residential areas are now completely dark. “This is a public safety issue,” said Estela Lopez, who runs the Downtown LA Industrial District, where she says 40 percent of the streetlights are out.

More than 1,200 LA-owned homeless housing units remain vacant two years after $800 million spending spree
It’s an odd location for the City of Los Angeles to have spent nearly $50 million to purchase a brand new, five story luxury apartment building for the homeless. The neighborhood around 1654 West Florence Ave in South LA consists of empty, dilapidated storefronts and abandoned, crumbling apartments. The few local businesses consist of liquor stores, marijuana dispensaries, fast food franchises and auto body shops. The building itself is located less than half a mile from the liquor store where the Rodney King riots broke out in 1992. The boulevard never recovered. The area median income is 35% below the City as a whole.
