McNally’s is no more.

The former bar and grille restaurant with the familiar sign greeting motorists along Rte. 2 in Westminster was recently torn down to make way for a potential residential housing project.

The proposed project by Summit Estates at Sargent Road LLC will include two buildings containing 36 units and three buildings containing 12 units each. According to town officials, Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities and MassHousing are determining if the project is eligible under the 40B-Comprehensive Permit process.

Officials noted there will be many opportunities available for the public to offer comment should the project be deemed eligible, and an application received.

The building, which had been vacant for years, had becoming a significant fire hazard, according to officials.

“The Westminster Fire Department has been working with the property owners to demo the former McNally’s building for several years due to safety concerns,” said Town Manager Stephanie Lahtinen.
