WESTFIELD, NJ — Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, Westfield Public Schools will be closed on Diwali, Eid al-Fitr and Lunar New Year when those holidays fall on school days.
The Westfield Board of Education unanimously approved the change at its meeting Tuesday, May 7. Board member Brendan Galligan was absent from the meeting.
“In sort of our ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion initiative, we wish to formally recognize and accommodate additional cultural holidays,” Board Vice President Sonal Patel said before the vote to approve the calendar.
“This action presents an opportunity to acknowledge the diverse religious and cultural backgrounds of our school community and to promote greater understanding and respect for different traditions without significant operational impact to the school year,” she said.
Schools will be closed on Oct. 20, 2025 for Diwali, on Feb. 17, 2026 for Lunar New Year and on March 20, 2026 for Eid al-Fitr.
The sole modifications made Tuesday to the 2024-2025 school calendar, which was originally approved last June, pertain to the two half days for elementary parent-teacher conferences in November 2024 and the two half days at the conclusion of the school year in June 2025, the district said.
