SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Warming temperatures are leading to more frequent and heavier downpours.

According to Climate Central, heavy rainfall events have become more intense across the country. Here in the Northeast, the amount of precipitation falling on the heaviest one percent of days has increased by 60 percent from 1958 to 2021. That’s the highest across the country.

Ted Perez Jr., the co-owner of East Mountain Country Club in Westfield has noticed some wetter conditions recently, “Last year was a very wet season. Summer, the winter was pretty wet. Spring has been pretty wet but two years ago, I think it was 2022 or 2021, was a drought.”

Warmer air can hold more moisture leading to more heavy rainfall. This leads to more flash flooding and river flooding as well.
