Demanding stronger PFAS rules to protect Kansas City water

Water connects us — to our families, our health, our culture and the places we call home — and it is vital to consider how we can work together to ensure every community has access to clean, safe water for generations to come. It’s no secret that communities such as mine have long faced the disproportionate impacts of dangerous industry pollution. Now, new data confirm that the impact of “forever chemicals” making our families sick is even worse than previously thought — and shows why stronger data and community involvement is so important. In a partnership between the Hispanic Access Foundation and Waterkeeper Alliance, local Waterkeeper groups and stewards conducted a monitoring project across U.S. waterways that presents new, targeted data confirming that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are everywhere. These chemicals, known as “forever chemicals” because they break down slowly, if at all, have serious health consequences. Research links PFAS, even at low levels, to increases in cancer, reproductive harms, developmental delays, immune system disruption, and more. In their study, local Waterkeeper groups tested surface waters across 19 states . They found one or more types of PFAS in 98% of sampling sites, both upstream and downstream of wastewater
