Ames secures property for 13th and Grand intersection expansion
Ames has acquired one of the two properties it needs to expand a busy intersection. To help tame traffic at the Grand Ave. and 13th Street intersection, Ames is planning to construct four left-turn lanes, expanding the streets in all directions to three lanes. The project will also include a new traffic signal and a shared-use path that runs along the west side of Grand Avenue. The plan requires the city to purchase and demolish Ames Seventh Day Adventist Church at 1303 Grand Ave. and a residential duplex property at 1302 Harding Ave . Multiple temporary easements are also needed. On Oct. 29, the Ames City Council approved a purchase agreement for the Harding Ave. property for $233,000. The cost does not include the $21,000 needed to relocate the tenants that live there, Ames Civil Engineer Mark Gansen said. Five temporary easements were also approved for four properties in the 1300 block of Grand Ave. and one in the 700 block of 12th Street, bringing the total purchase amount to $285,722. John Deere plans to close two Iowa manufacturing facilities and shift production elsewhere over the next several years. According to Progressive Farmer, the company will move windrower and round baler production from Ottumwa to Des Moines and transfer Hagie STS sprayer production from Clarion, Iowa, to Thibodaux, Louisiana. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that about 300 employees could be affected under normal production levels, although Deere said workforce impacts will depend on future business conditions and current production remains below typical levels due to the downturn in agriculture. Ottumwa officials estimate the closure could ultimately eliminate about 400 jobs and more than $30 million in payroll. AgWeb reported Deere expects to close the 115-year-old Ottumwa plant by fiscal year 2029, with the Clarion facility following a similar timeline. The company says it remains committed to its planned $20 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing over the next decade despite softer equipment sales and lower profits.
