Family-owned grocery business Sunrise ShopRite broke ground on state-of-the-art ShopRite supermarket on Bloomfield Avenue in West Caldwell.

Scheduled to be open by fall 2025, the 90,000-square-foot store will be nearly twice the size of Sunrise’s current 57-year ShopRite on Passaic Avenue. The store will include expanded produce, meat and seafood departments, a variety of prepared foods, and a wine and spirits department.

Sunrise said the Passaic Avenue ShopRite will close permanently after the new construction is complete.

During a May 21 groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the upcoming store, Sunrise ShopRite representatives and township officials celebrated the project’s kickoff.

    Founded in 1940 by

Nathan Gladstein founded Sunrise ShopRite as a small food market in Caldwell in 1940. Now a fourth-generation owned and operated family business, the company has two stores (Parsippany and West Caldwell).

    It’s also a member of Keasbey-based Wakefern Food Corp., the nation’s largest retailer-owned co-op.
