New York heating assistance applications are open

New York households struggling with heating costs can apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program after applications opened Nov. 2. New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric are encouraging eligible customers to apply, according to a community announcement. HEAP is a federal grant program that helps eligible households with energy costs, repairs and weatherization. “We know energy costs can put pressure on household budgets, especially as we head into the winter months,” said Christine Alexander, vice president of customer service for NYSEG and RG&E. “Programs like HEAP can provide meaningful assistance to eligible customers, and we encourage anyone who may qualify to apply and take advantage of the support available to them.” Income-eligible households may receive one regular HEAP benefit per season. Eligibility and benefits depend on household income and size, the primary heating source and whether the household includes someone younger than 6, someone 60 or older or someone who is permanently disabled. Regular HEAP is scheduled to remain open through April 16, 2027. The dates could change depending on funding availability and demand. PENN YAN–The Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Program, also referred to as the State Superfund Program, is New York state’s program for identifying, investigating, and cleaning up sites where the disposal of hazardous waste may present a threat to public health and/or the environment. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) maintains a list of these sites on the registry of inactive hazardous waste disposal sites. As described in more detail below, following the initial investigation or site characterization completed at the K & L Cleaners site (2469 Route 54A, Penn Yan), the site was added to the registry as a Class 2 site that presents a significant threat to public health or the environment.
