WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Joe Biden honored fallen officers in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday. The National Peace Officers Memorial Service is part of Police Week which brings thousands of law enforcement officers from around the country to the nation’s capital.

The service was a moment to thank police officers but also a chance to address the issue of their safety on the job.

“We owe you, as a nation,” said Biden.

In an address to police officers outside the Capitol, President Biden honored their colleagues who have died.

“Every time you put on that shield and walk out of the house, your family wonders if that call will come,” said Biden.

According to the FBI, 60 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2023, down from previous years.

“We can never thank you enough for your courage, your service, and your sacrifice,” said Biden.

On Capitol Hill lawmakers took the opportunity to appeal to officers.

California Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu says Democrats have done more to secure funding for law enforcement than Republicans.

“Democrats believe in actions and our actions send a strong signal that we honor those who protect and who serve,” said Lieu.

New York Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik criticized Democrats for what she called a pro-criminal agenda.

“Republicans recognize the need to fight for our police and against the far-left extremists anti-police movement,” said Stefanik.

House Speaker Mike Johnson promised Congress will do more to defend police officers like expanding concealed carry for officers and supporting mental health resources.

“We will be passing legislation on the floor to make that clear and to do everything we possibly can to celebrate those officers and to protect those who protect all of us,” said Johnson.

Johnson said they will also address anti-police attacks and vote to deport illegal immigrants who assault police officers this week.
