    DMV grocery price check: Where prices have gone up, down

    WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — DC News Now continues to track prices on grocery essentials as consumers continue to find ways to stretch their dollar.

    Another grocery price check reveals changes to what you’ll pay at three popular supermarkets here at home when compared to weeks and months prior.

    From what’s on the shelf to what’s behind the freezer doors, prices are fluctuating across major grocery stores including Walmart, Giant and Safeway.

    The USDA said grocery prices rose by 5% last year, when meats, dairy, fats and oils got more costly. It said that food prices have increased by 25% over the past four years.

    DC News Now sized up some pantry essentials at Walmart, Giant and Safeway. Below are the prices published online as of Monday.

    Gallon of 2% milk

    • Giant: $3.99
    • Safeway: $4.99
    • Walmart: $2.59

    Russet Potato

    • Giant: $1.26
    • Safeway: $1.11
    • Walmart: $0.75

    Bread

    • Giant: $2.89
    • Safeway: $1.79
    • Walmart: $1.42

    Brown eggs

    • Giant: $3.79
    • Safeway: $5.99
    • Walmart: $2.24

    Compared to the price two months ago, an avocado rose $1 at Safeway, brown eggs increased 79 cents for a carton of 12 at Giant and chicken breast per pound went up $1 across the board.

    For the remainder of 2024, the USDA predicts grocery prices will rise 1.2%, and 4.3% when dining out.

    Before heading to the store, check digital coupons and store apps to bring down what you pay at the register. Store loyalty programs can also offer discounts and cash back
