WARRENTON — Volunteers are needed to help the North Coast Land Conservancy remove Scotch broom from the Surf Pines Habitat Reserve in Clatsop Plains from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The work party will meet in the parking lot of the Surf Pines gatehouse.

Coast Guard seeks to federalize anchorage grounds east of Astoria
As the president of Columbia River Pilots, Jeremy Nielsen is no stranger to the narrow and sometimes unforgiving waters that flow between Astoria and Portland. The river is a designated marine highway — and as on any highway, Nielsen said, travelers need stops to rest, fuel and do maintenance out of the flow of traffic. For commercial ships, anchorage grounds have long served that purpose. But as vessel traffic and size have increased in recent years, anchorage capacity has lagged, spurring concerns for safety along the waterway.
Plant sale set for Saturday
The Clatsop Soil & Water Conservation District is holding its 12th annual Native Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot at the Netel Grange. The sale includes a wide variety of native and edible plants and a variety of pollinator plants. The plants are provided by the Watershed Garden Works nursery. A portion of the sales will be donated to support district operations.
County commission candidates make final push before election
With less than a week before the election, candidates for District 2 on the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners are taking their final steps along the campaign trail. Tessa Scheller and Anthony Huacuja are competing for an open seat on the ballot Tuesday after Commissioner John Toyooka chose not to run for reelection. District 2 encompasses Gearhart, Clatsop Plains and portions of Seaside and Warrenton.
Seaside boys golf gains valuable experience at state
Seaside High School boys golf capped off their season with a sixth-place finish in the 4A State Championships. The trip to Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell was the first for this current crop of golfers. The young Seagulls gained valuable experience throughout the two-day event, finishing with the fifth-lowest score each day. The total score of 707 was behind Marist Catholic (659), Baker/Powder Valley (663), North Bend (703), Scappoose (703) and Cascade (707).
