Bridge closures planned in May
The Oregon Department of Transportation will close the New Youngs Bay Bridge and the Old Youngs Bay Bridge for nighttime road maintenance in early May. The bridges on U.S. Highway 101 and Highway 101 Alternate connect Astoria to Warrenton.

Nature Matters presents talk by Ed Kolodziej
"Roads, Car Tires, and Coho Salmon," a Nature Matters talk by Ed Kolodziej, takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fort George Lovell Taproom. The doors open at 6 p.m. Kolodziej and his team researched why coho salmon were dying in Puget Sound for many years, and they concluded that pollution linked to traffic, dense populations and roadway runoff was causing the mortality events. He has also collaborated with the North Coast Watershed Association to test streams around the North Coast for chemicals associated with roadway runoff.

Michael Bonome’s cabin cruiser is stuck in the sand in Ocean Park, Washington, after running aground a few weeks ago, MSN reported. Bonome had run the boat on lakes and rivers, so he thought he’d give the ocean a try. When the “waves were getting pretty big and scary,” he tried to head for the shore — but the boat started overheating, and then the engine shut down.
