Upcoming Nationwide Emergency Alert Test: What Local Residents Need to Know
On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide emergency test alert. The test will start at 11:20 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time. The goal is to evaluate the system's ability to warn the public about national emergencies. During the test, cell towers will broadcast the alert for around 30 minutes.
Nehalem Valley Care Center Receives Major Grant to Upgrade Medical Records

Two incidents occurred in Tillamook County, Oregon this week. In the first incident, a Tillamook sheriff's deputy and a state police trooper responded to a call about a man throwing bricks at a house in Rockaway Beach. They fired their weapons at the man, resulting in his death. The details of the shooting are currently under investigation. In the second incident, the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, a non-profit museum organization, experienced a break-in and robberies at their historic museum in Garibaldi. The perpetrators tampered with electrical cabinets and caused delays in the museum's operations.

Rockaway Beach Kite Festival takes flight
The skies above Rockaway Beach were dotted with whales, bears, dragons and even an astronaut from September 15 to 17, as the Rockaway Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Kite Festival returned for its 47th year. Relaxed flying took place throughout the weekend, while festivalgoers were treated to displays of competitive and synchronized flying on Saturday. Kite flyers included Kirk Stickley, Craig Kite, Quad Squad Northwest, Rod Thrall, Steve Tipton, Team Kitelife, the Laser Rabbits, Alaskiters Kite Club President Kirk Stickley and the Sky Sisters. There were also a wide variety of vendors at the wayside, offering a variety of food, clothing and, of course, kites for sale.

Cannon Beach welcomed thousands of visitors over the long Labor Day weekend, and Saturday, September 2nd was clear and warm. Shortly after noon, two Cannon Beach lifeguards patrolling the Chapman Beach area noticed two children and four adults being swept away from shore in a rip current near Chapman Point. One of the lifeguards quickly entered the water to initiate a rescue while the other called for assistance from the Cannon Beach and Seaside surf rescue teams. The Nestucca Valley School District reached a settlement with former teacher Katy Bean Bamford for more than $100,000 in November 2022 to resolve her complaints about her contract’s non-renewal.
