WARREN (WWJ) -- Warren Police are investigating a shooting at a home on Friday that has a small child hospitalized with critical injuries to his face and head.

The victim, an 8-year-old boy, was rushed to a hospital after a 911 call came in at round 3:25 p.m. about a shooting at the Cove on 10 Apartment Complex, in the area of Hoover and 10 Mile Rd.

According to police, investigators believed the child found a handgun in his home, picked it up and shot himself in the face/head area.

While the child was being transported to the ER by paramedics, Warren Police officers and other law enforcement agencies assisted by blocking intersections along the way to get him there as quickly as possible, police said. The child was last reported to be in critical condition, and "was responsive to pain stimuli," according to police.

Police said both of the child’s parents were home at the time of the incident. They said it was unsecured and the child got a hold of the gun in a kitchen cabinet.

"As of this point in the investigation, it does not appear that more serious foul play was involved, police added, noting that this remains an active investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Rose at 586-574-4793.
