Council Explores Housing Changes to Keep Pets Out of Shelters

LOS ANGELES - Pet restrictions in rental housing are drawing new scrutiny at City Hall as Los Angeles looks for ways to keep animals out of its overcrowded shelters. The City Council voted unanimously Friday to explore broader housing protections for pet owners, including a potential ordinance reducing or eliminating breed, weight and size restrictions in housing that receives no public funding.Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez, who introduced the housing motion, said restrictions are forcing some residents to surrender their animals to remain housed."No one should be forced to surrender a member of their family just to stay housed," Hernandez said during Friday's meeting. "But if you go into our shelters, you'll find time and time again how many animals and pets have actually been given up because of this issue -- because they've been forced to surrender their pet or their family member because of their housing situation."The council approved three separate motions addressing the city's six animal shelters. Alongside the housing proposal, members advanced Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez's efforts to strengthen animal control staffing and increase investment in spay-and-neuter services. The measures seek to reduce the number of animals entering shelters while improving the city's ability to respond to animal-related emergencies. The Becerra era and Raman’s ‘earthquake’ in LA

TRANSITION BEGINS — In the five months between Xavier Becerra ’s come-from-behind primary victory and his general election win, he and his circle could deflect questions about his coming administration. California can only have one governor at a time, they said, and he wasn’t taking anything for granted. But now that voters have officially made him their next governor, everyone in Sacramento is racing to get some answers about what comes next: Who will Becerra hire and appoint? Which interest groups will be ascendant? What policies will he prioritize? The lobbyists, union officials and legislative leaders at his victory party offer some hints. Among the VIP’s circulating in West Sacramento were Becerra team members, including campaign hands Robbie Abelon, Kyle Layman and Lindsey Cobia — an erstwhile top Gavin Newsom deputy — and unofficial counselors like Arsenio Mataka, a former aide from Becerra’s attorney general days who focused on environmental issues. As we’ve noted elsewhere , Becerra’s sphere also includes adviser Courtni Pugh, longtime aide Liz Saldivar, veteran politico Karen Skelton, and policy adviser Nicole Elliott (another Newsom alum). Some of Sacramento’s most powerful interest groups did not endorse Becerra until it was evident he’d prevail. That made his early

Council Names Youth Center for Curren Price Amid Corruption Case

LOS ANGELES - A pending public corruption case did not stop the Los Angeles City Council from voting unanimously Friday to name a youth and community center after outgoing Councilman Curren Price. The council renamed the Slauson Connect Center the "Curren D. Price, Jr. Youth and Community Center" during a nearly two-hour celebration of his 13 years representing the Ninth District. Price will leave office in December because of term limits.Price faces 12 counts involving allegations of embezzlement and conflicts of interest. He has vehemently denied wrongdoing and maintains his innocence. His case remains ongoing.Jennifer Clark, a North Hollywood resident and vice president of the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council, criticized the decision to attach Price's name to the center while he faces criminal charges. Other residents raised similar objections.Inside the celebration, however, council members, city officials and guests did not address the criminal case, according to City News Service. Price referred indirectly to his difficulties and spoke of attempts to tarnish his name."I'll be the first to tell you that these years have not always been easy. In face, you face some setbacks, difficult decisions and face some criticism or share criticism. I learned that in public service,
