Vagabond to close, but it might not be the end of the Mexican restaurant
A downtown favorite for tacos and Mexican street food is closing its doors for good. Vagabond , 1122 N. Edison St., will serve its last customers on July 18. “We are grateful to everyone who has made Vagabond part of their story,” owner Matt Schmidt said in a statement. “Our team, our guests, our neighbors, and the downtown community have all helped shape what Vagabond became. As we look ahead, we remain excited about future opportunities to grow, evolve, and bring memorable food.” Vagabond became popular for its creative spins on street tacos, including its Korean beef, Argentinian steak and Sriracha fried chicken varieties. The restaurant also serves burritos, enchiladas, and snacks like queso fundido and walking tacos. Known for its modern-industrial design with a vintage twist, Vagabond’s signature design spotlight was its vintage airstream that doubled as a bar inside. The restaurant opened in December 2014 , replacing Rudy’s Mexican restaurant , which had occupied the space from 2001 to 2014. It’s a part of the Water Street Brewery Group, which also operates nearby bars The Harp, Trinity, The Brewery, and Water Street Brewery locations in Oak Creek, Delafield and Grafton. Schmidt said those businesses will remain open. Vagabond

A new multifamily development is proposed next to Franklin Costco
A 166-unit multifamily concept is proposed next to Costco in Franklin, although the mayor thinks it's a wrong fit. The project, called LEO Franklin, would include one- and two-story buildings with standalone single-family units, townhomes, cottages and duplexes on just over 24 acres along South 31st Street, west of the Northwestern Mutual campus and the future Costco, which is currently under construction . LEO stands for "Love Each Other," according to leoliving.com . The potential $51.6 million project was presented as a concept to the city in March 2026, but is now a full proposal. Mayor John Nelson said the project is the wrong fit for the area and should be along South 27th Street instead. “My position hasn’t changed that I do not support the project,” he said following a presentation of the proposal at the July 9 Plan Commission meeting. “I don’t doubt that you’re looking to put a very quality-driven project in our city, and we appreciate that. I would just like to see it not on South 31st Street. South 27th Street, yes.” But commissioners saw it differently, voting unanimously in favor of a land combination, conditional use, planned development overlay and the site plan. Three

Harambee coffee shop Rise and Grind Cafe goes on "hiatus," closing King Drive location
Tables and chairs were stacked along the back wall of Rise and Grind Cafe as the neighborhood staple prepares to permanently close its 2737 N Martin Luther King Drive location on Friday, July 10. While the door was still open on Tuesday, July 7, and some employees were still moving around the space, the store has officially ceased operations, with the exception of its Senior Dining Program, which will run through July 27, and its upcoming Poetry and Pancakes event on Saturday, Aug. 8. Baboonie Tatum, 49, and her co-founder, Larina Hightower, 49, decided to shut down Rise and Grind after more than a decade in business . The decision to close came from a variety of factors, according to Tatum, such as personal health challenges and wanting to spend more time with her mother. "My mom is 80, so it is important for me to close this out and really spend more time with my family," Tatum said. However, Tatum expects this closure only to last a few years. Rise and Grind Cafe is slated to open a smaller storefront in the former Career Youth Development Building at North King Drive and West Clarke Street, just a few blocks
