Viroqua businessman Steve Campbell intends to bring rural common sense to flip 96th Assembly District

VIROQUA, Wis. (WKBT) -- A Democratic candidate for Wisconsin's 96th Assembly District said Thursday he's running as a "common sense moderate."

Viroqua businessman Steve Campbell is running as a Democrat in the 96th District, which now covers Vernon County and southern La Crosse.

Campbell runs group homes for adults with disabilities, but said he grew up poor in Viroqua's trailer court.

At a campaign event in Viroqua Thursday, he said his top priorities are restoring a woman's right to choose and improving public education funding.

He estimated $1,000,000 this year are coming out of Viroqua's school district for private school vouchers. He said that program doesn't help the greater good.

"They have a lot of testing and other rigorous demands they have to follow that private schools don't, and yet, that million dollars is leaving this small, rural district," said Campbell.

Campbell is going up against former La Crosse County Board Chair Tara Johnson for the Democratic nomination.

The winner of the August 13 primary will challenge Republican incumbent Loren Oldenburg.
