Roanoke's roaming bear has been to school and now to church
They say truth is stranger than fiction and indeed it is. Last week on May 24, a bear was reported at Round Hill School off Oakland Blvd. and Greehurst NW and the school went on lockdown. The animal began moving south and was later filmed in the backyard of a man on 10th Street NW near the bridge. The bear decided to go to school that day and today he chose to go to church. Earlier around noon the bear had moved further west and was spotted at Central Baptist Church at 1502 Staunton Ave NW Roanoke. I was told someone placed a video on Facebook but have not seen it myself.

RAM House offers a challenge to the Roanoke Valley to help the homeless
Roanoke Area Ministries also known as the RAM House is offering a challenge to the Roanoke Valley to assist them in offering help to the most vulnerable in the area. RAM is in need of a new building due to an increase in homelessness in the area and the current building at 824 Campbell Ave SW is no longer able to fill the growing needs of the agency. RAM serves breakfast to the homeless and lunch to anyone who is in need and they are open 365 days each year. They feed an average of 200 people a day just for lunch and have helped about 2,000 individuals with over $300,000 in financial assistance that prevents them from being homeless.

58-year-old woman dead after vehicle crash in Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Roanoke County Police Department says a woman is dead after a single-vehicle crash occurred on May 30. Around 2:18 p.m. on Tuesday, police report a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed on Goodwin Avenue, and became airborne when the vehicle crossed Wildwood Road. ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Dr. Michael Brennan has been named director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Dr. Brennan was appointed to the position in early April 2023 and is the 14th Director in the history of the NHC, a division of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. New report shows homelessness is on the rise in the Roanoke Valley
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Blue Ridge Continuum of Care‘s annual ‘Point In Time Count’ shows more than 300 people experienced homelessness this past January. Over the past year, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the Roanoke region has increased by 54%. That is the largest increase in the Roanoke Valley since they started reporting the data in 2009.
