VICTORIA, Texas - A Victoria couple had just laid down to rest after celebrating Mother's Day Sunday night when they woke up to smell of smoke.

Firefighters responded to the structure fire at the home in the 3400 block of Flamingo Drive at around 1:23 a.m. Monday.

Dewayne Williams said first responders told him the fire started as a freak accident involving burnt wires in a corner alongside the front door.

Electricity to the home had to be shut down and the house sustained smoke damage in the attic.

The American Red Cross arrived shortly after 3:50 a.m. to assist the couple with temporary housing.
