As if Scottie Scheffler’s life wasn’t already charmed — ranked No. 1 in the world and just having welcomed a first child into the world with his wife, Meredith — he began his opening round of the PGA Championship by holing out for eagle from the first fairway.

Scheffler finished the day at 4-under par, well in contention, five shots off the lead.

On his hole-out, you could feel the electricity and hear the thunderous roars running through the grounds at Valhalla when Scheffler’s ball disappeared into the cup for an eagle two on the par-4.

The 27-year-old Scheffler, who won his second Masters green jacket last month at Augusta, entered this week having won four of his past five tournaments.

His wife just days ago gave birth to their 9-pound son, Bennett.

    And now this.

Scheffler, using a 9-iron, dunked his approach shot from 167 yards out on his first tournament hole as a father.

Incredibly, this is the third consecutive year that a player made an eagle on a par-4 on his first hole of the PGA Championship.

Scott Stallings, starting on the back nine, did that on the 10th hole at Oak Hill last year. Jesse Mueller, also starting on the 10th hole in 2022 at Southern Hills, did it on No. 10 there.

Both Stallings and Mueller missed the cut in those years.

Don’t expect Scheffler to miss the cut on Friday. He has a much better chance at winning this tournament than missing the cut.

Only two players have ever won the Masters and then each of his next two PGA Tour starts regardless of timing: Ben Hogan won all five of his official starts in 1953, starting with the Masters, and in 1978 Gary Player followed his win at Augusta National with wins at the MONY Tournament of Champions and the Houston Open — all within a three-week span.

Scheffler has won four of his last five starts.

Over the last 70 years, only three other players had a five-start span like that: Woods (several times, most recently when he won five consecutive tournaments spanning the end of the 2007 season and the start of 2008), Vijay Singh (2004) and Arnold Palmer (1962).

Scheffler entered the day having shot par or better in each of his last 40 official PGA Tour events, which is 12 shy of Tiger Woods’ record of 52, set between May 2000 and January 2001.

Scheffler’s stroke average during the streak is 67.53. Woods was 67.65 during his streak.
