Heart City Cattle Battle
The Heart City Cattle Battle will be held in Valentine on June 9th and 10th at the Cherry County Fairgrounds. According to co-organizer Josh Delaney, area youth are especially urged to enter this clinic and cattle show. The Battle begins with Check in on Friday June 9th at 12 noon. A livestock Judging Clinic from 2 to 5 and Fitting Clinic from 5 to 7PM. Friday evening the showmanship contest begins at 7. The public is welcome to watch. Saturday June 10 the action picks up with the cattle show with market animals/top 5, breeding bulls, Market Heifers and Steer division champions and breeding bulls and heifers division championship and heifers. $2,000 added money for the Heart City Cattle Battle June 9th and 10th along with buckles for top 5 breeding, market and showmanship. . Lawrence Turner known for quality stock in the Sandhills
Lawrence Turner grew up in a log house, working on his parents’ ranch 2 miles east of Sparks, Nebraska, and even though he almost lost his life after a horse stepped on his stomach and still has the scar to show for it, he never lost his love for cattle and horses.
Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame inducts nine new members
The 18th Annual Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony will be held June 10, at the 4-H Building at the Cherry County Fairgrounds in Valentine, Nebraska. Social Hour will begin at 4 p.m., and a benefit auction will take place at 5 p.m. with the banquet at 6 p.m. and induction ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
Water Shutoff in Valentine
The City of Valentine Water Department has informed KVSH News that there will be a water shutoff for residents in part of Valentine on Tuesday morning for about 4 hours from 8am until noon. City of Valentine Water Customers on “A” and “B” Streets from Wood to Cherry Streets, and Wood and Cherry Streets from “A” to “B” Streets will all be affected from 8am until noon. This will be followed by additional interruptions later in the week for customers west of this area. Stay tuned to KVSH for those further.
Senior Legion team gets off to great start with win over Valentine
HARTINGTON — The Hartington American Legion baseball players laced up their cleats Sunday for their first game of the 2023 season against Valentine. Lukas Wortmann started on the mound for the Hartington Seniors. He gave up two first-inning singles, before getting a pop-out. Another Valentine single left the bases loaded with two outs. Another single for Valentine brought home two runs. Wortmann then ended the frame by tossing a strikeout and forcing a ground-out.

Vehicle Pursuit Last Friday
On Friday, May 12th, Valentine Police and a Cherry County Sheriffs Deputy were involved in a pursuit with a white vehicle at Approximately 3:40PM. By 3:45 KVSH Radio was getting phone calls asking what was going on. The pursuit was terminated by law enforcement about 3:52 for the safety of the public as the driver and passenger were identified by officers.

Winner Boys Win, Girls 3rd At 7A Track
MISSION – Winner earned the boys team win Thursday at the Region 7A track & field meet at Todd County High School. The Warriors defeated Bennett County by 21 points, 142 to 121. Winner’s girls were third with 117 points. Bennett County won with 144. Winner First-Place Winners.

MPCC Valentine to Host Crime Scene Investigation Workshop
The Mid-Plains Community College Valentine campus will offer a workshop about crime scene investigation next month. CSI-Myth vs. Fact is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. June 6. It will be led by Lynne Dean, a retired forensic scientist from King County Sheriff’s Office in Seattle, Wash. Dean has over 35 years of experience as a Latent Fingerprint Examiner in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
Planting Day on Main Street
Starting at 8:30am this morning, Valentine area community volunteers showed up to help with Planting Day on Main Street in Valentine. Representatives from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum were on hand to help coordinate the planting of over 1,200 shrubs and perennials and 25+ trees in the bump outs at intersections and the remaining mid-block sidewalk planter locations to complete the finished look of Valentine’s reconstructed Main Street. City employees were helping with coordination.

This Friday, May 12th starting at 8:30am Valentine area community members are invited to help in a Volunteer Planting Day on Main Street in Valentine, NE. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about tree and shrub planting, using water-wise plants in the landscape, and general planting how-to’s from representatives from the Nebraska Statewide.

Community Input on Old Shopko Building
The City of Valentine and Cherry County Tourism Board have jointly engaged an architect to help conduct a feasibility study on converting the old Shopko Building into a community wellness and convention center. The building has 18 foot ceilings and in a little over 36,000 square feet. Thursday evening the community was invited to the former Shopko building to provide ideas and discuss the possibilities with the building. About 75 people took advantage of the opportunity to provide input. Some the ideas included conference center for up to 500 people with breakout rooms and kitchen facilities. Pool tables, darts, trampolines, tumbling mats and rock climbing wall. Space for banquets, weddings, post prom, and family gatherings. A basketball court and pickle ball courts and possibly a small theater.
