VFD Called Over Memorial Day Weekend
The Valentine Volunteer Fire Department was busy over the Memorial Day weekend on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday night, firemen responded to the report of a car fire in the alley behind Third and Ray streets. According to Valentine Volunteer Fire Chief Terry Engels, it was determined that a wiring harness was likely to blame, and the fire was controlled with a personal fire extinguisher before trucks arrived.

Valentine Pool To Open Memorial Day
The beginning of summer. For some, it’s the last day of school. For others, the summer solstice on June 21st marks the first official day of summer. But for many, the Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer season. According to Valentine City Manager Shane Seiwart, the city’s park facilities are all open for the summer, and the Valentine Family Aquatic Center will be opening for the season on Memorial Day. The weather may be a factor in this plan, however, as the pool will only be open to swimmers when the official temperature is at or above 70*.

Highway 97 Road Construction Update
An update on the Highway 97 road construction around Merritt Dam. Motorist heading to camp site need to be aware of construction in the area. The milling operation of removing 2″ of asphalt from the existing roadway and trench widening has completed its work items. Asphalt placement has completed placement of the bottom lift, 1 ½ ” of Asphaltic Concrete, of the roadway.

Valentine Volunteer Fire Department Holds Annual Elections
At the annual meeting in May, the Valentine Volunteer Fire Department re-elected Terry Engles to the position of local Fire Chief, Courtney Fowler assistant chief, and president Daniel Bitner. Other positions elected include vice president Kyle Temple, secretary-treasurer William Beel, safety officers Reece Weber and Luke Grubham, captains Ross Brockley, Danny Boes, and Tadd Buechle, and training officer Chad Gale.
Cody’s Circle C Day
After initial reports that the Circle C Day celebration in Cody, NE would be on hold, a group of concerned area citizens got together to organize the 61st annual event slated for Saturday, May 25th. Many of the standard events are scheduled, including the Parade at 9AM, Sand Volleyball, Rodeo at 11, Cornhole, Little Mr. and Miss Circle C and of course the smoked brisket BBQ in the park followed by the street dance. They are also planning a ranch horse race about 4:45MT. Registration for Little Mister and Miss Circle C is now underway with registration at Cody Livestock Supply and voting at local businesses. Rodeo entries can be sent to Shara Ford at 37558 South Kilgore Rd or call 402 389 0917. Parade entries and forms can be picked up and dropped off to Deb at the Cody Post Office. 31st annual Nebraska Star Party
The 31st annual Nebraska Star Party returns to the KVSH area July 28th through August 2nd this summer. The theme is ‘Just Imagine”. In 2022 Dark Sky International designated the Merritt Reservoir location as its 200th worldwide Dark Sky Park. This designation is expected to bring more participants to the Nebraska Star Party which already draws 3 to 4 hundred star gazers each year. Families enjoy the dark night sky’s and take advantage of other activities in the Valentine area such as golfing, tubing, museums, fishing. Boating and viewing wildlife. They also offer a beginners field school at Valentine High School during the first part of the week. For more information go to nebraskastarparty.org.
