Halfway to deadline to eliminate traffic deaths, Toledo has work to do
Toledo set an ambitious goal in 2021 to eliminate all traffic fatalities by 2031. The city is now halfway to its deadline, with traffic fatalities continuing to decrease but significant progress still needed to reach zero. “It’s important to remember that Vision Zero is not about eliminating all crashes, but making improvements to mitigate those that result in the most serious, life-altering injuries and fatalities,” said Stephanie Bartlett, the city’s commissioner of traffic management. Vision Zero is a national initiative that encourages communities to eliminate preventable traffic fatalities and severe injuries among road users. Eighty-two communities across the United States have taken the pledge, according to Vision Zero data. In Ohio, only Toledo and Columbus have signed on to the initiative. Personal choices can help prevent crashes and serious injuries, Ms. Bartlett said, such as wearing a seat belt, obeying the speed limit, and putting away distractions such as cell phones. The city is addressing other risks through road design, crosswalk improvements, and dedicated bike lanes. “Our goal is to add elements of safety into all the city projects,” Ms. Bartlett said. “Even making small upgrades like crosswalk improvements, sidewalk connections make a difference in how people perceive traffic safety

Road Warrior: Traffic shift on Summit; traffic glitch on Hill
A major traffic change is scheduled Tuesday as the Summit Street reconstruction north of Galena Street reaches its halfway point. Sometime early in the day, city officials expect contractor Gerken Paving to open the rebuilt southbound lane and close the northbound side for rebuilding. The switch will allow side streets on the northwest side of the street to reopen, while vehicles to and from businesses and parks on the Maumee River side will have to wade through a work zone for most of the rest of the year. This includes restoring New York Avenue to through traffic. But the most important change is that all traffic through the work zone will flip from northbound to southbound. Heading downtown from Point Place on Summit is possible again, but going to the Point now involves either Manhattan Boulevard or I-75. The posted detour will use the Manhattan option, via I-280 from Galena. The Toledo Department of Transportation expects the new traffic pattern to be in place for about two months, or until late October. **** A city project to resurface, beautify, and curb speeding on Executive Parkway in West Toledo will start Monday. Traffic will be reduced to one lane each way

Fuel spill shuts down Ohio Turnpike access at Ohio 53
Editor's note: This story has been updated. Access to the Ohio Turnpike at Ohio 53 was shut down as of 11 a.m. Aug. 20 after a fuel spill. It was reopened at various points later in the day to accommodate the cleanup, but was expected to be finished by the evening of Aug. 20. Fremont Assistant Chief Dave Zimmerman reported the fire department was called out to the Ohio 53 roundabout and turnpike access around 10:30 a.m. They estimated around 50 or more gallons of diesel fuel was spilled, and the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike Commission have been contacted to aid with the cleanup. Zimmerman reported that vehicles can exit the turnpike at Ohio 53, but only travel south. Ohio 53 was closed north and south of the Ohio Turnpike at CR 89 and CR 119, where vehicles had to detour. The assistant fire chief said there was a hit-and-run accident at the roundabout, but the involved vehicles were gone when first responders arrived. ODOT assisted with the cleanup, using materials to absorb the fuel. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Sandusky County Sheriff and ODOT assisted at the scene. Oregon council to consider stop signs along Easthampton to improve safety
Oregon may be installing stop signs at several intersections along Easthampton Drive to improve safety. Rodney Shultz, deputy engineer in the city’s public service department, conducted a review of five intersections along Easthampton that determined the need to replace yield signs with stop signs. The matter will go before Oregon City Council on Monday. The intersections with Easthampton are at Cromwell, North Reach, Hazelton, Springtime, and Beachwood drives. “Stop signs at those intersections make sense for safety reasons,” Mayor Steven Salander said. Some residents have complained about the need for stop signs. “It is a potential danger in my neighborhood,” Lynn Gibbs, of Dogwood Drive, said at a recent council meeting. “We’re having a lot of close calls. I think stop signs should be on the crossroads on Easthampton because drivers are not paying attention to yield signs.” Councilman David Andrus said he had asked the public service department a couple months ago to review the intersections. The city evaluated existing traffic-control devices, traffic patterns, roadway characteristics, sight distance, pedestrian and bicycle activity, and crash history at those intersections, and determined there was a need for stop signs to replace the yield signs. “You would expect to see a clear
