Rocky Mount Firefighter completes 75th year of service
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WFXR)– A Rocky Mount Firefighter recently completed his 75th year with the Rocky Mount Fire Department. In a post on Facebook, the fire department highlighted Burton ‘Spike’ Pugh, who has served the area and community since 1949. He continues to actively participate in department meetings, training, and special events, with RMFD celebrating how valuable he has been to the community, his peers, and the department over the last three-quarters of a century.

SML Democrats celebrate its military veterans members
On May 13th, the Smith Mountain Lake Democrats held a reception to celebrate their members who are military veterans. Veterans member recounted experiences, challenges and achievements while serving in the Army, Navy, and Marines in Vietnam through September 11th. Many were posted overseas and in war zones. Their duties varied from submarine hunter, radar operator, war crimes investigator, cook, meteorologist, transportation specialist, and chemical warfare officer to chaplain.

In a related first responder field – Emergency Medical Services (EMS) – “fully involved” isn’t a term that fits within the job duties of Emergency Medical Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics. But it does put action to the expectations of its volunteers: they are required to be fully certified the same as paid professionals.
