Blakeman plans 'Fire Kathy Hochul' rally at Elmira Elks Lodge Oct. 28
New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman will bring his down-to-the wire campaign to Elmira on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The two-term Nassau County executive seeking to oust Democratic governor Kathy Hochul will headline a GOP rally at the Elmira Elks Lodge, 300 E. Gray St., at 10:30 a.m. Blakeman will be accompanied by Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy at the Elmira event, which is being billed as a “Fire Kathy Hochul Rally.” With early voting already underway and election day in about one week, Oct. 28 will be a busy campaign day for Blakeman and Langworthy. In addition to Elmira, the Republicans are also scheduled to hold “Fire Hochul” gatherings in Owego, Hornell and Olean on Wednesday. The Blakeman campaign has touted putting "New York state First," with proposals to cut state income taxes, reduce utility bills and reverse what he calls "soft-on-crime" bail laws. At a campaign event in Syracuse on Oct. 9 that featured President Trump, Blakeman called New York state "number 50 in economic outlook" under Hochul's leadership. "We have to create good jobs, good benefits to keep our young people here," Blakeman said. "We have to look at business not as the enemy but as a partner.

Ithaca Fire Department sets sail with new fire boat
The Ithaca Fire Department announced the delivery of a new fire boat, in a statement. The boat is a Lake Assault Boat, made in Superior, Wisconsin. The Ithaca Fire Department serves the south end of Cayuga Lake, and this craft will fill a significant rescue and firefighting gap on the lake and along its shores, officials said in the statement. It is highly capable and replaces an old, failing boat that IFD has at times struggled to keep afloat and in service. Filling a need The need for a more advanced and capable fire boat has existed for a long time. The department is often called to the lake for boat fires, sinking boats, and fire and medical emergencies on the water and along the shore. Firefighting (both structure and vegetation) along the west and east shores can be difficult because of limited road access, steep terrain, and water supply issues, department officials said in the statement. The boat will dramatically improve the department's ability to help. It can fight fire with its on-board water cannon, supply onshore fire apparatus or deploy hose lines directly from the boat. Marine 1 will be available to mutual aid partners on Cayuga Lake
