Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory with John Marks
How should we remember George Washington’s involvement in slavery? Americans have argued over that question for nearly 250 years. More than any other “Founding Father,” Washington’s ties to slavery have vexed us. He enslaved more people than any of his fellow Founders, yet he was the only one of them to emancipate the people he held in bondage. Since his death, Americans have grappled with this contradiction, shaping and re-shaping our collective memory of Washington and slavery—along with our understanding of the nation. In this talk, historian and writer John Garrison Marks will draw on his book Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory to tell the story of how politicians, abolitionists, educators, activists, Washington’s former slaves and their descendants, and others have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated slavery’s place in Washington’s story over the past 250 years. Marks’s work reveals how generational struggles over our collective memory of Washington and slavery have always been part of a bigger conversation about defining America and its people—and continue to shape the nation’s public discourse.

Popcorn machine fire closes Cambridge movie theater
CAMBRIDGE — A popcorn machine fire on Thursday temporarily closed the Cambridge Premium Cinemas. Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a fire at the movie theater in the Dorchester Square shopping center off of Route 50, according to a Rescue Fire Company post on Facebook . A caller told the fire company that a popcorn machine caught fire and it began to spread. Firefighters arrived and saw smoke coming from the theater’s doors. They “quickly located the fire, which had been held in check by the building’s sprinkler system,” the company said. Crews extinguished the fire and removed the smoke from the building. Cambridge Premium Cinemas posted on its website that it’s temporarily closed. Online sales will be refunded and in-person sales can be redeemed when the theater reopens. As of Friday at 5:30 p.m., no updates about when the theater may reopen had been posted to the website or Facebook. Anyone with questions or concerns for the theater is asked to email info@flagshipcinemas.com. This story has been updated.

Embers Restaurant Relaunches as 1945 Steak & Seafood
OCEAN CITY, Md. – The restaurant long known as The Embers will relaunch in Apr. 2026 as 1945 Steak & Seafood. While the address remains unchanged, the restaurant now operates from a brand-new building completed in 2023. Over the past year, ownership says they have quietly introduced the evolved concept under the original name. As the culinary direction advanced, however, the legacy branding continued to create confusion tied to the restaurant’s former buffet experience.
