RIP 'Chicken' Ed; Shrimp & Oyster Eats in Sussex; Toscana is 35
"Chicken Ed," a Dewey Beach legend, has passed away. Ed Riggin ran Ed's Chicken & Crabs on the corner of Del. 1 and Swedes Street in Dewey Beach for nearly 40 years. The site is now the home of a Nick's Mini Golf location. Riggin didn't retire from the business. Ed's Chicken & Crabs burned down in 2016 when a drunken driver hit the building. In 1978, Riggin first fired up a grill pit and set up a soda machine in the earliest days of Ed's Chicken and Crabs. The property had long been owned by the family of Rusty Catts. His father and Riggin had been longtime business partners. Chicken initially was the main menu item, and Riggin later added crabs to the menu and moved to a mixture of indoor and outdoor food preparation. The decades-old eatery served Dewey visitors and residents each summer until a woman crashed her 2013 Mini Cooper into the building, severing a propane line and sparking a massive fire in August 2016. She later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and criminal mischief and was ordered to pay $241,000 in damages and serve two years of probation. Ed Riggin, who was 84
