Late-season storm closes Northern California interstate 03:49

TRUCKEE -- Interstate 80 is nearing a full reopening late Saturday night after a late-season storm dropped snow in the Sierra and closed the interstate for multiple hours due to multiple spinouts and collisions over Donner Summit.

Eastbound traffic was released at about 8:45 p.m. with chain controls in place from Alta to the Nevada state line.

At 11 p.m., westbound traffic was released in Truckee with chain controls. The highway will remain closed at the Nevada state line until the traffic in Truckee clears.

Over on Highway 50, crews are holding eastbound traffic at Meyers due to spinouts. It's unknown when it will reopen. Chain controls are also in place from Twin Bridges to Meyers.

Traffic continues to be turned around on Highway 20 at Nevada Street. It's unknown when the road will be reopened.

Snow levels dropped to about 4,000 feet Saturday afternoon. Scatter snow showers will continue to impact Sierra communities throughout the night.

Temperatures were about 20-30 degrees cooler than Friday.

In the valley, thunderstorms developed in the afternoon. They brought brief heavy downpours, lighting, small hail and gusty winds.

Most areas are expected to dry out Sunday and more spring-like weather is set to arrive next week.
