This summer, private donors paid for Tampa-based firm MGT to provide early guidance on the takeover of Memphis-Shelby County Schools , according to oversight board Chair Billy Orgel. MGT works in government and technology advising worldwide and has cited successful involvement in other state school interventions in Texas and Indiana . Before an early October meeting of the Memphis takeover board, MGT drafted job descriptions for the takeover board’s executive director , established its rules of governance, and outlined the approval process for MSCS contracts that exceed $50,000. The full scope of MGT’s work is still unclear, as is the total cost. 'Man of action': How Holiday Inn shaped the hotel industry, and Memphis still benefits
There was a time when Holiday Inn was one of the largest single employers in Memphis, when the massive international chain’s first hotel opened in 1952 on busy Summer Avenue. Although the company is no longer headquartered in the Bluff City but based in Atlanta, its founder Kemmons Wilson's grandchildren are still carrying on what he started today. That’s according to Spence Wilson Jr., board chairman at Kemmons Wilson Companies Management. Wilson said his grandfather, Kemmons Wilson, who founded Holiday Inn and KWC, transformed the hospitality industry after a disastrous hotel stay during an eight-person family road trip to Washington D.C. “Back in those days, there was no consistency in hotels,” Wilson said. “They finally find a hotel $6 a night … . Next morning, they go to check out. The innkeeper's like, wait a minute, you've got five kids in there? That's $2 per child. So with the surcharge $16 later, he's fuming, and he's thinking there's got to be a better way.” Described by his grandson as a “man of action,” Wilson was already coming up with ideas for his hotel on the drive home, and within a single year, Holiday Inn was open. Growth was swift. In
