Green Bay Public Market readies revised project plan, loses county grant
This story has been updated to add new information. The oft-delayed Green Bay Public Market project has lost a grant just as backers say they're on the verge of sharing a scaled-back plan and updated timeline for the North Broadway food hall. Brown County Corporation Counsel David Hemery in an Oct. 15 email notified Public Market officials the county rescinded the $250,000 project grant , awarded in December 2024. The project would not meet the funding requirements, he said. The county at the same time revoked a similar, $100,000 award to the Green Bay Children's Museum on the same grounds. The project will not complete construction by Dec. 31, 2026, a key requirement of the grant, Hemery on Oct. 28 told the Brown County Board. The county's Administration Committee in April asked Hemery to contact the Public Market and Children's Museum for updates due to inactivity and that neither project's leaders responded to the county's letters. Shirley Van's family of dancers remember her for kindness, toughness
Shirley Van was never a mom, but she sure knew the love of a life spent surrounded by children. Her Shirley Van's Dance Studio and The Dance Company isn't just a Green Bay institution, it was her happy place. It’s where the gifted dancer and instructor made a lasting impact on generations of students who came through the doors, teaching them to put their best foot forward, not just in the studio, but in all they do in life after they leave. Van, whose legal name was Shirley Volm, died Oct. 23 at age 95. She leaves a legacy in the community that spans decades of dancers, countless stages and productions, more than 40 years of “The Nutcracker” and a permanent place in Green Bay Packers history as the choreographer and director of the team’s cheerleaders, the Green Bay Sideliners, in the late 1970s and ’80s. She started teaching in 1945 at just 14 years old, her dad building props for her and loading them into a trailer as they went up and down the Fox Valley. Some 70 years later, after she retired, she still found a way to come watch “The Nutcracker” practices until her health no longer
