'The Sound of Music' actress talks Appleton roots ahead of PAC run
"The Sound of Music" is making its grand return to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center Nov. 3-8. While the movie presents a familiar story about family, the musical offers so much more, presenting questions of love, conscience and political pressure. Set in Austria in 1938, the story starts off with young and independent Maria Rainer who takes on the job of governess to the seven children of disciplined naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria's warm and playful nature (and more-than-present love for music) grants the children with new perspectives and love not often received. As she grows closer to the family, she also navigates her own personal struggles of belonging and knowing what kind of life she wants for herself. For those who primarily know the 1965 movie, it's worth mentioning this story started off as a stage musical. The production lies heavily on the Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Edelweiss.” Spanning generations, the musical remains a family-friendly classic to this day. For this preview, The Post-Crescent spoke with Cayleigh Capaldi, playing Maria, ahead of the Appleton run, asking what attendees can expect and what it's like playing a lead role in

This Wisconsin Mexican Kitchen Starts Every Morning With Fresh Tortillas
Tortillas get made by hand here every single day. They aren’t just for the tables, either. The same fresh batch heads straight to the grocery shelves next door. That’s right, this spot is a full-service Mexican restaurant and a stocked Mexican supermarket under one roof. You can finish lunch and then grab produce, pantry staples, and imported treats on your way out. I love how practical and fun that combo feels.

Tony Shalhoub's new memoir rooted in Wisconsin is literary comfort food
Tony Shalhoub’s new culinary memoir should come with a warning. Perhaps something along the lines of: “Reading this book will make you secretly long to be part of the Shalhoub family just so you can come to the reunion every summer in Door County.” “We Thought They’d Never Leave: Musings on Food and Family” is the Emmy Award-winning actor’s first crack at a book, and like most everything he lends his talents to, it’s playful, funny, from the heart and but another reason to make Green Bay proud to call him a native son. With the help of his daughter, Josie Adams, Shalhoub gives readers a most gracious window into his upbringing on the city’s east side in a house at 829 Doty St. with nine siblings, Lebanese American parents and a kitchen that smelled of stuffed grape leaves, bratwurst and roasted lamb. It was as a child that his family began spending summers in Door County – picking cherries for 25 cents a bucket, swims in the “healing waters” of Lake Michigan and breakfasts at the Sunset Restaurant and Motel. Those days on the the scenic peninsula of Door County have turned into what is now the extended Shalhoub
