Classic car stolen from backyard of disabled veteran, former firefighter
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Just listening to Todd Young talk about his car, you can hear how much it means to him. “She only had 84,000 miles on her. Except for a few minor problems, she was in really, in good shape for a car that age,” described Young. “Cause most of the time, cars get to be that old, they either rust away or crash or, you know, they kind of lose ‘em.”

Gun violence awareness event builds community and solidarity
Less than six months after returning from U.S. Army deployment in 2010, Dr. Heather Vincil lost her platoon sergeant to self-inflicted gun violence. She explained that while people often imagine gun violence as being gang-related or tied to homicides, over 50 percent of all gun-related deaths in 2022 were caused by suicide. “Gun violence is a public health crisis endangering the lives, safety, and mental health of our community,” said Dr. Vincil, the regional director for care coordination of Harbor Behavioral Services and a board member of the Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Dr. Vincil was one of many featured speakers at a Friday event hosted by Toledo Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense. The event, held at the Peace and Healing Commons, was organized to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day and kick off Wear Orange Weekend. The Commons was transformed into a beacon of orange T-shirts, banners, signs, and tablecloths as community members gathered to listen to advocates and survivors. Attendees were invited to write who they wear orange for on hand-painted signs.

Discover 'hidden gems' at the fifth annual Old Orchard Garden Tour
On Sunday, the Old Orchard neighborhood, formerly a mosaic of apple and pear orchards, will return to its botanical roots with its fifth annual garden tour. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features a self-guided tour of seven backyards throughout the neighborhood. Each garden has been approved by a subcommittee of the Old Orchard Neighborhoods Association for its plant selections, unique use of space, and stylistic choices. “We all get to see what people’s front yards look like because we drive down the streets or walk the streets all the time,” said event organizer Brent Lohmann. “But there are so many hidden gems behind people’s homes. You don’t realize what's back there.” Using a map provided by the Old Orchard Garden Tour website, oldorchardgardens.org, attendees will walk about a mile through the shaded streets and historic trees of Old Orchard, traversing from one garden to the next. Homeowners will be stationed in their respective yards to answer questions and chat with fellow community members.
Neighborhoods come together for community garage sales
A box of books sits on the lawn at a Point Place home; racks of clothes hang outside in Library Village. Piles of items for sale scattered on the lawns outside Toledo homes is not an uncommon sight in the summer. It signals the beginning of garage sale season. This is true for Point Place residents, who are preparing for the neighborhood’s annual garage sale. The sale will take place June 13 through June 16. Point Place Days take place during the same weekend and celebrate the neighborhood with activities, a car show, and a parade. “We’ve been hosting it for about 20 years,” said Joyce Ejhinger, who has resided in Point Place for 67 years.
Judge orders new trial for 1 of 5 convicted in 1992 homicide
Citing exculpatory evidence that Toledo police failed to turn over to either defense lawyers or prosecutors, a Lucas County judge has granted a new trial to one of five men convicted of murder in a Toledo man’s 1992 death. Judge Gary Cook’s order applies only to Eric Misch, one of three juveniles among the people accused of Vernon Huggins’ beating death in Wilson Park in North Toledo. Misch was denied due process of law “when the state of Ohio suppressed material, exculpatory evidence prior to his trial,” Judge Cook wrote. “This opinion does not serve as an exoneration,” the judge emphasized in conclusion. “Should the state elect to proceed, [Misch] will again stand trial for the murder of Vernon Huggins.”
