A Millbury, Ohio man entered a plea Monday to involuntary manslaughter for a fatal shooting in September in East Toledo and was sent to prison for at least six years.

Cory O’Conner, 45, of the 100 block of Lakeland Drive, had been charged with murder in the death of Christopher Yglesias, who was shot Sept. 30 at Albert and White streets and died in December at a rehabilitation facility in Columbus.

His Alford plea in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to the reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter is not an admission of guilt, but he conceded sufficient evidence existed that he risked a more severe punishment if he took his case to trial on the original charges.

O’Conner had engaged in a standoff with police in a house in the 1400 block of Albert after the shooting.

O’Conner waived a pre-trial investigation and Judge Ian English then sentenced him to three years for the base conviction plus three years for a firearms specification. He could serve up to 18 additional months in prison if he misbehaves while incarcerated.

Other counts in the original indictment, including having weapons while under disability, were dismissed at sentencing.
