After years of heartbreak, Wachusett wins first playoff game since 2021
HOLDEN — When Thomas Anderson, Mike McGurn and Jack Smith were eighth graders in 2022, the three were invited by Wachusett football coach Mike Dubzinski to stand on the sidelines and watch the Mountaineers play in a Division 1 playoff game in Westwood. “I wanted that to be me one day,” said McGurn, who is now a senior captain for Wachusett. “We ended up losing,” said Anderson, also a senior captain in reference to the Mountaineers’ playoff loss to Xaverian that year. “I would say that really sparked our passion to come here, reset the losing mantra and get us back on track to a winning program.” Four years later, the trio did just that by helping fourth-seeded Wachusett beat No. 13 Shrewsbury , 49-14, in a Division 1 Round of 16 game Friday night. Anderson tossed three touchdown passes while Smith secured two rushing scores as the Mountaineers mustered their first playoff win since 2021. “To finally get a win and move onto the next round, there’s no better feeling than that,” Smith said. Said McGurn: “It means everything.” “To be able to make it through a playoff game and get the win,” Anderson added, “it’s everything.” FINAL: Wachusett

Alumnus will buy land, drop legal case against Anna Maria College
PAXTON – An Anna Maria College alumnus who alleges the college reneged on a promise to gift him part of the campus has agreed to drop his claim and buy the land, court records show. David Roy of Paxton, who sought in August to bar the college from selling 2.4 acres he claimed was rightfully his, reached an agreement to buy the plot for $175,000, court records show. Roy, whose parents owned the college’s food service for three decades, has presented evidence in court that Anna Maria offered to gift him the land in 2023 to “right” an unspecified “wrong,” but ultimately reneged. A Worcester Superior Court judge last summer barred Anna Maria from selling the disputed land, and his lawyers this summer asked a judge to find he held “equitable title” to it and prevent the college from selling it. The college, citing lack of interest, canceled its bankruptcy sale of the entire campus last month, noting at the time it planned to sell 2.4 acres to an unspecified bidder. Recently filed court documents show a judge approved sale of the property to Roy, and that he had agreed to dismiss his legal claims after the sale closes. Roy,

Griswold/Wheeler blanks Montville/St. Bernard for fifth straight win
Not even inclement weather can slow down the Griswold/Wheeler football team. Junior quarterback Liam Cassidy tossed two touchdown passes, senior running back Jaxson Demicco rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries, and the Wolverines’ defense forced seven turnovers en route to a 14-0 ECC Division 3 victory over Montville/St. Bernard during a steady rainstorm Friday night at Montville High School. It was the Wolverines’ fifth straight win . “I couldn’t be more proud of these guys,” Wolverines first-year coach Josh Howarth said. “They’re coming out every single week doing what we expect them to do. We’re playing great football at the right time.” The rain wreaked havoc for both teams during a scoreless first quarter that featured numerous fumbles and dropped passes. “We knew it was going to be a dogfight coming in here,” Howarth said. "Coach Tanner (Montville coach Grove) has these guys rolling right now. We knew that they want to run the ball and play power offense, especially with No. 50 (lineman D’Mitri Charles) who is an absolute stud. We had to play into their game and started to run the ball too. Unfortunately, with the rain and everything we had to play through the elements.” Early
