Go west: Spirit Halloween store moves to West Rome
If you’re looking for ghoulish delights to decorate your house on Halloween or a scary costume for the kids, note that the Spirit Halloween store has moved from Mount Berry Mall to a new location in West Rome. The new store is in the former Bargain Hunt space at 2210 Shorter Ave. It’s considerably larger than the former mall location, which was previously a Toys “R” Us that closed in 2018. “This space gives them more freedom to work on the retail experience and a lot more parking,” said Donald Edwards, a broker with Atlanta Commercial Real Estate. Alexis and Austin Walker were shopping for Halloween decor Monday with their daughter Marlee, who attends Model Elementary School. They noted the new store seemed much bigger and had a pretty realistic spooky camp cabin at the front. “There are a lot of scary costumes here,” Marlee said. “We’re gonna put up some scary stuff on the house.” According to Edwards, the Spirit Halloween store will be there until November. Spirit Halloween was started by Joseph Marver as a pop-up Halloween store in Castro Valley, California, in 1983, according to Business Insider. He eventually expanded Spirit Halloween to 60 locations before it

Rome-Floyd Planning Commission recommends denial of RTK Auto lot expansion
The Rome-Floyd Planning Commission recommended denying a rezoning request that would allow a used-car dealership on Martha Berry Highway to expand onto two neighboring residential parcels. Planning and Zoning Director Brice Wood said the two vacant, wooded parcels next to the lot operated by RTK Auto run along Glenview Drive. The remainder of that road is residential and the county’s future land-use map identifies the parcels for residential use. “Staff saw this as a commercial encroachment into an otherwise residential area,” Wood said. Nearby residents submitted a petition raising concerns about traffic, lighting, noise, property values and what other commercial uses could potentially occupy the parcels in the future. Wood noted that Community Commercial is a broad zoning classification that allows uses beyond a car lot. Bailey Hankins, speaking on behalf of RTK Auto owner John Lee, said the dealership’s proposal was more limited. The plan called for clearing part of the wooded property and creating a gravel lot for vehicle inventory while retaining portions of the woods as a buffer. “The parking will only be for inventory,” Hankins said. “There will be no... customer parking back there at all.” Hankins said there would be no entrance to the proposed
