A familiar candy merchant at the Tacoma Mall now has a second location in Pierce County.

See’s Candies is celebrating the grand opening of its new permanent store this weekend at 3824 Bridgeport Way W. in University Place.

The store is in Green Firs Towne Center, the same shopping center that’s home to Pierce County’s only Trader Joe’s.

The grand opening, slated for a ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, will include free samples and special deals.

Special guests will include Pat Egan, president & CEO of See’s Candies, as well as members of the drum line and cheer team from Curtis High School to “cheer on the crowd,” according to Adriana Cunningham, senior PR manager for the company.

The first 50 customers in line will receive a special gift, Cunningham said via email. Customers who shop within the first three hours Saturday will be entered into a raffle to win free lollipops for a year, Cunningham noted.

Kevin Briske is director of University Place’s Community and Economic Development Department.

Briske told The News Tribune in response to questions via email that See’s Candies operated a seasonal store in the shopping center for several years “and then last year decided to open a permanent location there.”

“The City is very excited they chose University Place for their only location outside of the Tacoma Mall in Pierce County,” he added.

The candy brand’s first appearance at the University Place shopping center was Christmas 2019 as a holiday pop-up, according to Cunningham, followed again for the winter holidays the next three years and Valentine’s Day in 2023.

See’s Candies received full occupancy from the city in March for its 1,564-square-foot space. The brand is “thrilled to now officially be open year-round,” Cunningham said.

The candy maker launched more than 100 years ago in California and has grown to more than 200 U.S. shops selling the brand’s chocolate and other assorted treats. In addition to Tacoma and University Place, See’s has stores in Bellevue, Burlington, Kent, Kirkland, Lynnwood, Spokane, Tukwila, Vancouver, Washington and Woodinville.

The new UP store is open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
