CENTRAL NEW YORK – A season ago, the Westhill softball team stunned two-time defending champion Marcellus and eventually reached the Section III Class B championship game before falling to Chittenango.
Looking to build upon that success, the Warriors broke open last Tuesday’s game against Christian Brothers Academy with a big fourth inning on the way to beating the Brothers 10-4.
In the bottom of the third, Westhill scored twice, but did far better in the fourth, going through the entire lineup and producing six runs.
Cadence Ramsing hit a home run and added a single. Catherine Cottrell, Alexa Korrie and Bella Johnnson had two RBIs apiece, with Sophia Johnson scoring twice and adding an RBI. Samantha Snyder pitched a complete game, striking out five.
Westhill kept it going Friday with a 3-1 victory in the rematch with CBA, Snyder managing to blank the Brothers after a first-inning run in another five-hit complete game where she struck out six.
A pair of runs in the top of the first driven in by Korrie’s double all that the Warriors would need, though it tacked on an insurance run in the fourth on Ramsing’s second home run in as many games.
West Genesee will be in Class AA for the sectional tournament and, because of the creation of Class AAA, won’t have to worry about the likes of Baldwinsville, Liverpool or Cicero-North Syracuse in the post-season.
However, the Wildcats opened last Tuesday in Camillus by blanking C-NS 4-0, with pitcher Maria Brandt overcoming seven walks by limiting the Northstars to just two hits.
They were 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Lorelai Leskoske’s double scored two runs. Single runs in the fifth and sixth doubled that margin as Brynlee Elkins got an RBI and joined Brandt, Alanna Bowman and Anna Drogo scoring those runs.
An 11-2 loss to Whitesboro followed a day later, the Wildcats held to three hits by Addison Cook as Tucker Reese led Whitesboro with a single, double and five RBIs.
Then WG fell to Rome Free Academy 10-4 on Friday, the Black Knights scoring in every inning capped by a five-run fifth. Alexa Thompson led RFA with three hits and three RBIs as Brynlee Elkins drove in a run for the Wildcats.
Jordan-Elbridge pulled out a 6-5, eight-inning thriller over Skaneateles in a game that went back and forth, the Eagles grabbing a 3-0 first-inning lead but the Lakers using a run in the first and three in the fourth to go in front 4-3.
The Eagles tied it 5-5 in the fifth, and it stayed that way until the top of the eighth, when it scored twice and held on despite a Skaneateles run in the bottom of the eighth.
Abbie Ahern’s home run was the big blow as she got a pair of RBIs to go with three hits and three runs scored. Erin LaVancha added two hits as Ellie Walsh went three-for-four to lead Skaneateles, Carly Schnell and Ayla Pas’cal adding two hits apiece.
Bishop Ludden took a 15-9 defeat to Fabius-Pompey last Tuesday, scoring in every inning except the second yet never putting a big rally together. Amyah Macknail had a trio of hits and Serena Royal added two RBIs. Payton Taylor homered for the Falcons.
In Wednesday’s 13-10 loss to Onondaga, Ludden had leads of 3-0, 6-5 and 10-6, all of which the Tigers erased as OCS tied the game 10-10 in the fifth and won it with three more in the sixth. Royal again drove in rwo runs while earning three hits. Macknail also had two RBIs.
Solvay took leads of 5-4 and 7-5 in its game with Onondaga/LaFayette, only to surrender those advantages and fall 8-7 in eight innings. Still, Rachel Willsey had three hits, with Jenna Wing adding two hits and two RBIs. Annabelle Stewart also had two hits.
