Ken Griffin and Jeff Bezos helped make Miami a billionaire magnet—but Florida’s new $250,000 homestead exemption barely makes a dent for them
A middle-class homeowner and the owner of a $50 million mansion could save about the same $2,000 a year under Florida’s new property tax cut. Only one of them will notice.

Voters rejected Virginia Key redevelopment deal. What happens to the marinas now?
On Tuesday, about 65% of Miami voters rejected an $80 million redevelopment plan for two city-owned marinas and waterfront land on Virginia Key. It was the second time in recent years that voters rejected a long-term lease of the almost 28-acre property, which includes the Marine Stadium and Rickenbacker marinas. But Tuesday’s rejection of Miami’s Referendum 3 doesn’t mean the current operator of Rickenbacker Marina — and its tenant, the Gramps Getaway bar and restaurant — gets to stay forever. Instead, it takes commissioners right back to the drawing board on an issue that has plagued the city for over a decade — with many of the same players vying for the valuable chunk of land. Moving forward, the City Commission could decide to put out a new request for proposals and take another bid to voters in the future, or commissioners could decide that the city should run both marinas itself. The city already runs the Marine Stadium Marina. Commissioner Damian Pardo told the Miami Herald he would be looking forward to new proposals, seeing it as an opportunity to “start from scratch.” “I would like to see a lot of community input and strong community benefits with a

Miami Carol City football players, parents sue FHSAA in last-minute playoff plea
This story has been updated with new information. Another high school football program has turned to the courts in an effort to keep its playoff hopes alive, but its legal challenge has hit an immediate roadblock . A Miami-Dade County judge on Friday, Nov. 6, denied an emergency request for an injunction filed by 11 Miami Carol City (FL) football players and their respective parents or guardians, leaving the Chiefs' postseason ban in place for the 2026 high school football playoffs. Attorney Jason Setchen of AthleteDefender and Coffey Burlington filed a verified complaint for declaratory and injunctive relief on Nov. 4 in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court. The lawsuit named the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) as the defendant and seeks temporary and permanent injunctive relief. I have tremendous respect for the FHSAA, but I think that what they did to Miami Carol City Football by imposing a post season ban on the entire team, which includes many kids who did nothing wrong, is overreaching and unfair. https://t.co/CYOynAultr — Jason Setchen (@AthleteDefender) November 6, 2026 The plaintiffs argued that the FHSAA's decision to ban Miami Carol City from postseason competition unfairly punished players who were not involved in the Oct.

Luxury condos get all-clear for historic church site in Brickell. What's next?
The downtown Miami skyline will continue to change with the approval of a 75-story luxury condo tower at a historic church on a slice of bayfront land. The 619 Brickell By Nobu will rise behind First Miami Presbyterian Church at 609 Brickell Ave. after the city’s historic preservation board lifted one of the last hurdles needed to build on the site. The Brickell area has seen a boom in luxury skyscrapers thanks to an influx of wealthy buyers. Board members voted 6-1 on Nov. 3 for lifting a historic designation from the church’s school and parking lot, which sits directly behind First Miami Presbyterian, an area that will become the tower’s home. They also approved shrinking the site’s historic boundary — which originally included the entire three-acre parcel that the church, school and parking lot sit on — to just the sanctuary footprint plus a 15-foot buffer. Only one condition came with the vote: that the preservation board retain architectural review powers if any substantial changes are made to the tower’s exterior. “We appreciate the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board’s careful consideration of all the information presented and its ultimate decision to preserve the historic 1949 sanctuary, enabling the church

South Florida U.S. Attorney Reding Quiñones abruptly resigns. What's next?
Jason Reding Quiñones resigned Friday as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, ending a tenure marked by turmoil within the Miami-based federal prosecutor’s office and controversy over its involvement in an investigation targeting perceived enemies of President Donald Trump. Reding Quiñones offered no explanation for his abrupt resignation, which came just three days after midterm elections in which Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate. He did not respond to text messages seeking comment. His resignation comes amid growing concern within Miami’s legal community over the politics surrounding the office, the departure of experienced prosecutors and the erosion of its traditional independence from political influence. Dan Gelber, a former federal prosecutor and Miami Beach mayor whose law firm represents former CIA Director John Brennan in an investigation involving the office, offered a stark assessment. “It’s been terrible to watch what’s happened to this office,” Gelber said. “Their morale is underwater. Their institutional expertise has been depleted.” Gelber, who spent about a decade as a federal prosecutor in Miami, recalled an office that handled some of the nation’s most consequential drug trafficking, healthcare fraud and foreign corruption cases. He expressed hope that new leadership could restore its
