A warm day with severe weather possible this afternoon and evening
Happy Wednesday, Northland! Not a warm day out Tuesday but it was notably warmer than Monday as the day got on with highs in the 40s and 50s. Showers brought in some needed rain with many seeing at least 0.25” and quite a few seeing over 0.5”. Temperatures to start off the day are very similar to the high temperatures thanks to warm air moving up courtesy of a system developing to our north. This system is going to bring down a cold front later on today, and ahead of this front we can not only see showers and storms, but severe weather too for the southern half of the Northland. The kinematics are set for this, with trough in the jet stream digging down to induce vertical motion and warm, moist air moving up lower down in the atmosphere. Now as it is still late October, there won’t be a whole lot of warmth or moisture needed for strong storms, with highs in the 50s and 60s and dew points in the 50s. However, with enough sunlight in the midday, we can see some of these storms get quite strong. Damaging winds and large hail will be possible, but the biggest threat will be the tornado threat and these tornadoes have the potential to be quite strong. It is important to note that this threat is conditional and not a guarantee that we even see severe weather but with eh environment we will have, stay weather aware as we head into the day.
