Nearly 3,000 ‘witches’ gather in Salem to break macabre world record in spooky stunt
Last weekend, more than 2,700 “witches” gathered in Salem, MA i n a world record attempt for the most witch hats worn at once. While the official jury is still out from the Guinness Book of World Records, there was no doubt that throngs of witches showed up for the charity event commemorating the area’s 400th anniversary. But while Salem’s history is notoriously a bit macabre, the vibe there today is anything but somber. And in spite of an uptick in visitors this time of year, full-time residents say it’s the vibrant community that lured them in and keeps them entranced. Massive crowds in spooky attire are nothing new for Salem’s residents. In fact, if history repeats, this October there will be around a million more Halloween fun-hunters descending upon “Witch City” (Salem’s nicknamed nod to the infamous witch trials of 1692). “Life in Salem is magical and I personally enjoy the influx of crowds during Halloween because I was among them 25 years ago,” says Luisa Cornish, who first visited Salem on vacation and immediately knew she wanted to live there someday. “We dropped by Salem because I was a huge ‘Bewitched’ fan, but the town was so warm

Chelsea Eyes 162 Apartments Next to Market Basket in Major Housing Push
Market Basket and Chelsea officials have spent roughly a year quietly shaping a concept that could transform the grocery chain's 30-acre property into a mixed residential and retail district, complete with 162 new apartments steps from the store's front doors. The plan remains conceptual, with no developer signed on and no formal proposal filed, but it marks one of the most ambitious housing ideas the city has floated for the area west of Route 1.

Providence accuses developer of 'scamming' city using affordable housing law
The Rhode Island Supreme Court heard fiery arguments this week in a case where the Providence City Council is seeking to intervene in a tax deal made by the administration of former Providence mayor Jorge Elorza affecting 10 downtown Providence properties owned by Cornish Associates, the real estate firm of Arnold "Buff" Chace. "This was an unlawful scam that was perpetrated on the Superior Court and the City of Providence," rang the accusation from Max Wistow, the attorney who argued on behalf of the City Council. According to Wistow, previous administration officials knowingly superseded their authority to broker a tax deal that, he claimed, violated tax stabilization agreements that the council had already passed on some of these properties. Lawyers for the 10 real estate properties fired back that the City Council's claims "sought to weaponize" ordinary civil functions in City Hall, that the council was on "a fishing expedition," that the case was "wildly outside" the strictures of timeliness when it was originally filed, and that the council had no standing to oversee, much less challenge, a tax agreement that it was not a party to. In short : After years of court arguments and appeals, attorneys in the
