Overnight construction on River Road at Beltline starts Aug. 10
River Road around the Beltline interchange will experience night work next week. Construction will start the week of Aug. 10 and occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., taking place on both sides of the interchange. The city urged drivers to slow down, stay alert and be patient during the construction. The project will repave the street, upgrade sidewalk ramps, update pedestrian signals and rebuild bus stops. The most visible change will be reconstruction of the Lane Transit District bus stops in front of the Santa Clara Square Shopping Center and Santa Clara Animal Hospital to convert them to a floating bus stop design. A floating bus stop routes the bike lane behind the bus platform so a bus can stop without blocking the bike lane and doesn't have to merge to re-enter traffic. “We can simultaneously improve safety for everyone and travel times for people using the bus with this simple bus stop redesign,” Will Carter, the project’s designer, said in a press release. This year the city identified River Road, alongside Highway 99 , as a dangerous street it wants to improve. According to the city's 2026 "vision zero" report , six pedestrians were killed on River Road

Amtrak train from Eugene no longer leaves Oregon
Update: This story has been updated to reflect that the closure now applies to the Amtrak Coast Starlight as well. The Amtrak route that starts in Eugene has temporarily suspended a portion of its passenger rail service. On Aug. 2, the vacant Centennial Mills warehouse in Portland caught fire . Portland Fire & Rescue put out the fire, but said it is concerned the 8-story, 116-year-old building could collapse because of fire damage and the city's Building Engineer would need to conduct a more thorough analysis. In the meantime the street and the railroad tracks adjacent to the warehouse are closed. Those railroad tracks are owned by Union Pacific but used by Amtrak for both Amtrak Cascades , the passenger rail line that goes from Eugene to Vancouver, British Columbia and Amtrak Coast Starlight which runs from Los Angeles to Seattle. During the indefinite closure, the Portland to Vancouver, Washington, leg of both service s is suspended. Jenny Cherrytree, spokesperson for Amtrak Cascades in Oregon said her team has reached out to passengers who bought tickets to either refund them or arrange buses instead. Travelers looking to use Amtrak to get from Eugene to Washington can buy an Amtrak bus

Poor Air Quality; Gas Prices; Daycare Opening
The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency says wildfire smoke is expected to continue affecting Lane County through at least Thursday afternoon. Air quality this morning in Florence and Mapleton is starting out in the moderate range but is expected to worsen as the day progresses. LRAPA says air quality could range from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy, with the heaviest impacts expected in the Willamette Valley. Officials say a nightly inversion is trapping smoke near the ground overnight and into the morning hours, with some improvement possible each afternoon. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed when smoke levels are high, limit outdoor activity, and check the Air Quality Index before spending time outside. The National Weather Service also has a Heat Advisory in effect through late today for Mapleton. Forecasters say a weather change on Friday could bring cleaner air, but the timing remains uncertain.
