SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Surfside Beach has named an interim police chief after current Chief Kenneth Hofmann at the beginning of the month suddenly announced his plans to resign.

Detective Ken Davis will step into the role as interim chief on May 3, which is Hofmann’s final day, the town said in a Friday afternoon news release. Davis has worked as corporal detective with the town’s police department since Sept. 26.

Prior to that, Davis was deputy chief with Horry County police and the police chief in several localities in both South Carolina and Tennessee, the town said. He has a Ph.D in public safety from Capella University and an MS in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina.

“Det. Davis has such a wealth of education, knowledge, and experience to lead our officers during this time,” Town Administrator Gerald Vincent said in the release.

Davis will work as interim chief until a permanent one is selected and approved by the town council.
