Robbinsdale seeks multicultural advisory commissioners
The city of Robbinsdale is looking for volunteers to advise the police department by via the Multicultural Advisory Committee. The Multicultural Advisory Committee is a core component of the Joint Community Police Partnership (a Hennepin County program that works collaboratively to enhance relationships between police and the community, specifically with immigrants, people of color, indigenous people, and faith communities). The committee is an engaged group of volunteers who advise the Robbinsdale Police Department on how to better serve, communicate with and understand the many cultures that reside in, work in or visit the Robbinsdale community. The Multicultural Advisory Committee meets monthly with police personnel to discuss topics that are important to their communities, build mutual trust and open up two-way communication. Greta Evans-Becker announces bid for reelection to Robbinsdale School Board
Greta Evans-Becker, Robbinsdale Area Schools' current school board clerk, has announced her intention to run for a second term. Evans-Becker’s reasoning is, “I would like to use my 34 years as an educator and school administrator in making decisions for District 281. I will continue to be a voice of reason and a calming presence on the board.” She also stated, “I believe in public education. I believe in our administration, I believe in our teachers and in our students. I believe in the Robbinsdale Area Schools. We have some challenges and we also have tremendous potential. It will be an honor to work with our new superintendent to raise student achievement, study district facilities for future planning, and improve community relations.” The election will be Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Brooklyn Center asks voters to approve sales tax to fix ‘antiquated’ community center
After years of planning and outreach, Brooklyn Center officials have outlined a new vision for the city’s community center. When residents head to the polls in November, they will decide if the multi-million dollar project moves forward. If voters approve, Brooklyn Center would impose a new 0.5% local sales tax to fund various additions to the community center: new gymnasiums, an indoor track and a teen center to name a few. Champlin Park-alum Josiah Strong has signed his first professional contract as a basketball player, joining Bosnian team HKK Siroki ahead of the 2024/25 season. Chickens move to 4040 Regent Avenue North
Eggs and entertainment: Brynn Okeson plans to keep four chickens at 4040 Regent Avenue North, Robbinsdale. Per city code, a person keeping or maintaining more than two chickens must obtain a permit and invite neighbors to a public hearing regarding said permit. The resident needs to follow proper collection and disposal of animal waste, proper storage of food and prevent pest invasion of food spillage and proper supply of water. The police chief, community development director, code enforcement and building official and other city staff approved this permit. At the public hearing, neighbors spoke in favor of the chickens. The council voted unanimously to grant the permit July 16.
