Webber Pool temporarily closed after suspect put "unknown white substance" into the water
MINNEAPOLIS — The Webber Pool in Minneapolis is temporarily closed after a man put an unknown white substance into the pool water.The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board said park police were called to the pool around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. A man had been "acting irrationally" and put his hand on the shoulder of a life guard, the board says. The man then also threatened to push the guard into the pool.After he made several verbal threats to staff and pool visitors, a witness said they saw the man deposit an unknown white substance into the pool. He then left the pool on foot, according to the board.Water quality staff are determining the best process for testing pool water, officials say. The staff is working with the Minneapolis Fire Department hazmat team, the regional chemical assessment team and the Minnesota Department of Health. Friday afternoon, the suspect was identified.Minneapolis park police are investigating the incident.

MINNEAPOLIS — Last week Minneapolis broke its all-time hotel revenue record, and grew year-over-year for hotel room demand and occupancy thanks to a variety of events and conferences in downtown.The last time the hotel revenue weekly record was set was during the combined Twin Cities Pride-Taylor Swift concert weekend last year. Revenue hit a high of $12 million during that week, but this year it increased to $12.5 million.Meet Minneapolis says this year, four major meetings and conventions brought in the hotel success, including the Academy of General Dentistry conference and Rubik's WCA North American Championship. There was also a Herbalife conference and the Stonewall Sports National Tournament which brought participants to the city.In all, the city has more than 10,000 hotel rooms available, and 9,881 of them were occupied on Saturday. The hotel occupancy last weekend was 81.8%, the second-highest since the pandemic. This time last year, the occupancy rate was 68.3%.Meet Minneapolis anticipates the Aquatennial, Basilica Block Party, as well as several concerts and the Indiana Fever game against the Minnesota Lynx will bring in a "significant number" of visitors to Minneapolis for the rest of the summer.

MINNEAPOLIS — A man is fighting for his life and a suspect is in custody after a violent carjacking early Friday near Minneapolis' Loring Park.Police say the victim was pulled out of his vehicle just before 2 a.m. on Oak Grove Street near Spruce Place, and at some point in the struggle the thief opened fire.The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Hennepin Healthcare.Police say the victim's car was later spotted by St. Paul police officers, who took the driver into custody.
