Two people killed in separate crashes overnight
TANGIPAHOA PARISH - Two people were killed in separate crashes in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parishes, according to Louisiana State Police. Police say William Edwards Jr., 67, died in Ponchatoula around 9:30 p.m. Friday night while riding his bicycle after his bicycle traveled into the northbound lane of LA Hwy 445 directly into the path of a Toyota Camry. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Sheriff-elect Jason Smith graduates from police academy
SLIDELL, La. — Washington Parish Sheriff-elect Jason Smith graduated from the Slidell Regional Police Academy Friday night. He was one of 33 graduates from the academy. Smith says he volunteered to take the course so that he's well-equipped for his new position. The rigorous training was 17 weeks long and included everything from handling weapons, handcuffing, criminal law and all the other things that are involved in being a basic peace officer. He was able to interact and train with police officers from 11 different agencies who are just starting their law-enforcement careers.
