Pedestrian killed on Pacific Highway has been identified by Medical Examiner
Authorities have released the name of a 50-year-old man who was reportedly struck and killed by a vehicle in Fife Tuesday night. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office listed on its public portal that Jemeel Markie Salaam Wiley died on Oct. 3 at 10:42 p.m. from “multiple blunt force injuries.” His death was ruled an accident. Fife Police Department spokesperson Daniel Goff told The News Tribune in a phone interview Wednesday morning that a caller reported at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday that Wiley was “standing in the roadway” when he was struck by a vehicle in the 2900 block of Pacific Highway. Police have not yet released information about the vehicle involved or any additional details from the scene, Goff said, but said its driver was “completely cooperative” with officers and showed “no clearly identifiable impairment.” It was still unclear if any other people were involved in the incident, Goff said. A countywide investigation team is now examining the scene and will analyze any adjacent surveillance footage taken at the time, Goff said. “There’s still a lot of things under investigation,” he said. He expected the team to release additional details about the incident in the coming days.

Will Tacoma tenants win big with ‘Safe Homes for All?' Early polling results out
Tacoma’s controversial “Safe Homes for All” measure is ahead by a hefty margin Tuesday night, according to early polling results. Initiative Measure No. 1 had about 59.48% of voters in favor and 40.52% of voters opposed as of 8:20 p.m., a difference of 10,199 votes. “Safe Homes for All” initiative amends the city of Tacoma’s rental-housing code and business-license code to give renters additional rights and allow the city to enforce the “Tenant Bill of Rights” measure that passed by citizen vote in 2023. The initiative proposes to fund city enforcement through per-unit license fees and fines paid by landlords, “improve compliance with tenant safety and protection laws” by increasing penalties for landlords who violate them, remove exemptions for large for-profit landlords who are repeat offenders and educate landlords and tenants on the law and tenants’ rights to form tenant unions, as previously reported by The News Tribune . The proposal generated fierce debate and investment from a multi-billion-dollar Seattle real estate firm . Opponents of Measure 1 included the Rental Housing Association of WA, whose spokesperson argued the initiative would force local landlords to sell to private equity firms, driving up rental costs and hindering new development, as previously

Traffic Alert: Power pole collision shuts down Pierce County street
A vehicle crashed into a power pole Wednesday morning, causing North Levee Road in Fife to close in both directions. The Fife Police Department first posted about it in a 7:18 a.m. X post , saying the closure was due to a “collision and powerlines [being] down. In a Facebook post, the City of Fife says because of the closure Frank Albert Road is closed between Industry Drive and Levee Road, while Levee Road is closed between Frank Albert Road and 54th Avenue Esat. “We anticipate this closure may be for a while due to the amount of damage and repair work needed to the electrical utility lines and poles,” the post said. “Alternate routes are advised.” Outage maps for Puget Sound Energy and Tacoma Public Utilities do not show any mass power outages.
