Cause of bad tasting, smelling Fremont drinking water identified
FREMONT – Specialized testing of the drinking water in Fremont has identified the compound causing smell and taste issues. While not harmful, new water treatments are cleaning up the municipal supply. Questions about a strange taste and smell to Fremont drinking water started in September. Safety Service Director Bob Gross said that the Fremont Water Treatment Plant immediately started looking into the problem. “We do daily, weekly, monthly testing that’s part of our regular routine, but because this is an organic compound, which is not harmful or a public health risk, it’s not a part of standard testing," Gross said. "So, the Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t require that to be tested. But when we noticed these issues we looked for a lab, we found that lab and we’ve been working with them, and they are doing this specialized testing." The city couldn’t find a problem with the water with regular EPA in-house water tests. They had to send the water samples to an outside company, Eurofins Environment Testing, who suspected the problem might be what other Ohio cities had struggled with in recent years. That problem was naturally occurring organic compounds called geosmin and methylisoborneol, creating taste and odor issues.
