SAULT STE. MARIE — The main highway connecting Sault Ste. Marie to the Mackinac Bridge will be slowing down to one-way traffic for the next four months. On Tuesday, May 28, the Michigan Department of Transportation is beginning a $3.5 million project to repair a large portion of I-75.
Animals moved into new addition to the Chippewa County Animal Shelter
SAULT STE. MARIE — Furry friends at the Chippewa County Animal Shelter are now settled into their new home, but they didn’t move too far. The animal shelter officially opened up their new addition Monday after everything was moved last week from the old building into the new one. Coast Guard members from Sector Northern Great Lakes in Sault Ste. Marie teamed up with shelter workers to move all the animals, furniture and supplies. It all started a few years ago when a person donated $450,000 in memory of his wife to the shelter. Other donations have since covered the rest of the cost.

As we head into the holiday weekend, the state is warning anyone planning to cross the Mackinac Bridge that you might want to prepare for a long wait. Feeding America plans distribution for Newberry and Gwinn Thursday
UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WLUC) - Feeding America West Michigan is working to ensure families have their shelves well stocked with food ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. The nonprofit organization has two food distribution events scheduled to take place throughout the day on Thursday. The first event is for residents in Newberry. Rudyard sweeps Pickford in baseball and softball doubleheader
RUDYARD - The Rudyard Bulldogs took on the Pickford Panthers in both baseball and softball on Tuesday evening. In baseball Rudyard beat Pickford 4-0 in game one and 3-2 in game two, in softball, Rudyard beat Pickford 13-7 in game one and 11-7 in game two.

Woman to stand trial in death of baby found in Mackinac County 27 years ago
ST. IGNACE, MI— A former Newberry woman will stand trial for the death of a newborn found in a Mackinac County pit toilet in 1997. Nancy Gerwatowski, 60, is charged with open murder, involuntary manslaughter, and concealing the death of an individual. In June of 1997, the remains of an infant were found in a toilet at Garnet Lake Campground in Hudson Township. Police investigated, but no leads were developed.
