Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state's top-ranking jurist is retiring.

Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Robinson made the announcement on Tuesday.

The Stamford native has been chief justice for six years and has served 24 years as a judge.

"During his tenure, Justice Robinson has made improving public access to the courts a hallmark of his approach, recognizing that justice operates best when it operates for everyone. He is universally admired as a compassionate, thoughtful, and skillful jurist", said Governor Lamont.

Robinson was the first African American in Connecticut to serve as chief justice.

Lamont said he will name Robinson's successor at a later date.
